Tango360

A Performance Tango Workshop

Current classes held in Boulder and Denver, Colorado. For registration information, please send an email to: deb@danceoftheheart.com

What is "Tango360 ?"

Tango360  is a performance tango workshop where tango couples meet to practice the discovery and refinement of theatrically satisfying artistic expression as it applies to tango dancing.  The approach we utilize incorporates our long experience in theatrical and "social" tango performance settings, and trains powerful performance skills based on the Meisner/Neighborhood Playhouse "Method" techniques especially adapted to the demands of tango dancing.

Tango360  facilitators Deborah Sclar and Brian Dunn draw from their decades of performing and teaching experiences, both in and out of the tango world, to guide and assist students in tailoring the practice of this technique to their dancing.  We expect this practice to result in riveting, powerful theatrical tango performance in a variety of settings: "milonga performances", stage tango and performance for film/video/still photography.

Tango360  is for the professional, for the novice and for any human being cultivating artistic excellence in their dance, in their lives and in their work.

Below is the class schedule we’re planning for our first series, subject to RSVP’s:

bullet

Class #1: 4-6pm Saturday, April 5 in Boulder    - OR -   7-9pm Wednesday, April 9 in Denver

bullet

Class #2: 4-6pm Saturday, April 19 in Boulder  - OR -   7-9pm Wednesday, April 23 in Denver

bullet

Class #3: 4-6pm Saturday, May 3 in Boulder     - OR -   7-9pm Wednesday, May 7 in Denver

bullet

Class #4:  4-6pm Saturday, May 17 in Boulder  - OR -   7-9pm Wednesday May 21 in Denver

Because were're limiting the class sizes in order to give each couple the personal attention necessary to meet our goals, we’ll require RSVP’s for each class. Please make arrangements to secure your partner before class. Students without a partner will not be admitted. You'll be expected to find some practice time as a couple outside of Tango360™ sessions to make the most of these classes.

The first class will be held this Saturday, April 5th, from 4 until 6pm at the PreEminence Hall Studio in Boulder (directions below).  Directions to the Denver class will be provided to those RSVP's confirming their attendance. Each class is $36/couple, but paying for a series of 4 classes in advance costs $120 a couple or $60 each. PayPal payment by credit card is available (see below).

Our Denver class will hold its first meeting on Wednesday evening, April 9th. We’re still confirming the number of couples, which will allow us to determine what space to secure in Denver to accommodate all attendees comfortably. We’ll communicate further information (specific location, times, etc.) to those who RSVP.

Since you and your partner will be working together, the classes will involve you developing skill in presenting material we’ll assist you in selecting that will exploit your combined strengths in a theatrical/stage worthy context.

We (Brian & Deb) will be filling the role of “directors” for the “cast members” (students in this class series). The goal is to master tango ideas that are more difficult than typical social dancing repertoire, although you will notice your social dancing skills improving as you push your edge in basic technique skills.

You are also welcome to bring a “problem piece” for us to work on with you.  While we will have some elements in common as a group, each couple will have ideas to work on that are specialized for their needs, physical gifts, current training and developmental direction.

As we discussed in our orientation class last Monday, one of the skills we’ll be developing is providing honest/constructive “audience member” feedback. Most dancers don’t receive adequate or honest feedback from their audiences or performances. We’ll be cultivating both a set of communication/perception skills, and a setting where those skills can be practiced, so that we can all support each other’s growth as performers.

Students are welcome to attend BOTH the Boulder and Denver classes, but as always, please RSVP. Dress is casual: be prepared to WORK! This includes yoga-esque stretches plus solo and couple warm-up drills. Do NOT expect our “rotation approach” typical of our other classes, though you are welcome to trade partners during the sessions at your own discretion.

Our first performance ‘project’ will be based on an audition announcement we forwarded to the community a few weeks ago involving a film project hosted by Robert Duvall starring Pablo Veron. This will involve making videos of pieces you’ll be developing. We’ll have copies of a selected piece of music on CD for everyone or feel free to bring your own. Further details will be covered in class, including future projects and performance opportunities.

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

Deborah Sclar & Brian Dunn

For the past 30 plus years, Deb has appeared in film, theater, music theater and opera productions from Los Angeles, California to Rome, Italy in leading and supporting roles. Additional credits include awards and scholarships to pursue her career as a classical singer and nominations for "Best Actress" and "Best Supporting Actress" awards from the Drama Critics Association of Hollywood, California.

Deb co-founded, administers and facilitates Acting360™. As a culmination of fourteen years of study with various Method practitioners, the Workshop has been offered to the acting community in the Boulder/Denver metro area, sometimes bi-weekly from 1998 through the present. Shortly after they became tango partners, Brian Dunn started as a student of these methods under Deb's direction for almost two years. Tango360 reflects an adaptation of the Acting360 work for a tango performance context.

With tango partner Brian Dunn, Deb commenced a performing and teaching career in Argentine Tango in September 1998.  Appearances have included featured tango performances with Ballet Nouveau Colorado in 2001 and the Aspen-Santa Fe Ballet's touring production of "The Nutcracker" in 2004, along with appearances in the IDO 2001 US Championships, and appearances with legendary bandoneonists Daniel Binelli and Daniel Diaz in tango productions in Spokane, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, and throughout Colorado.  With Cathy Gauch of Aircat Aerial Arts, Deb and Brian co-produced, co-directed and co-starred in "AIResTANGO", an original show combining aerial artistry with the sultry music and dance of Argentine tango. With the support of Boulder and Denver city grants, "AIResTANGO" was performed nine times in three cities over three years, receiving glowing reviews and standing ovations from sold-out houses.
