Part 2, Sept. 7-12, 2009

“Tango Milonguero”

For the third year in a row, we're honored to present special tango seminars with the incomparable Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne, set in Boulder's magnificent Avalon Ballroom in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains!

Many of you visiting this site will need no introduction to them. But for others, perhaps it's enough to say that these stunning tango dancers, choreographers and teachers represent the pinnacle of one of the most significant trends in the present and future development of the art of Argentine Tango.

For our first two years, Gustavo & Giselle have presented their acclaimed "Seminaro General", an advanced couples-only  tour de force of current tango dance experiences.  This year, we are favored with, not ONE, but TWO different Thematic Seminars, which go beyond the General Seminar to focus on an exploration of tango from a particular perspective.  For Part 3 of this unique tango adventure, held just after Labor Day, we will also include a selection of tango workshops in a-la-carte format.

"Tango is ultimately a relationship" -Gustavo

For more than 20 years, Gustavo Naveira has been at the forefront of cutting-edge investigations into tango structure, musicality and expression. During its revival as a popular dance in Argentina in the 1980's, his early experiences as a student, teacher and performer led to his obsessive pursuit of the structural roots of the tango social dance phenomenon. Ever since, Gustavo has tirelessly investigated and taught ways of understanding and explaining the structure and dynamics of the tango experience to Argentines and foreigners alike.

"Better can be a pleasure"-Giselle

Many say that the most significant influence on the development of tango dance in the last 50 years has been the arrival of increasing numbers of well-trained and talented women dancers. What had been a brutish representation of gender conflict and subjugation grew to represent instead an elegant and passionately intense "collaborative work of art."  Giselle Anne's inspiring clarity of technique and expression, deriving from her remarkable string of achievements in the worlds of ballet, stage, screen and tango, creates a magnificent foundation for her explorations of the radiantly beautiful possibilities of the "tango de la mujer."

 Gustavo's Bio

"Face the Tango as it is!"

We first studied with Gustavo in 1999, and first met Giselle in 2003. Many, many hours of advanced seminarios later, we count them as the tango couple who best personify, in body, mind and spirit, the heart and soul of what tango is, and what it can become. We are profoundly honored to again invite you into a deep exploration of the many-faceted tango of this radiantly inspiring couple.

From their website:

GISELLE:  She has demonstrated her abilities as a dancer and choreographer by performing in shows such as Tango Argentino, Tango Pasión, Mariano Mores, and Los Solistas de D'Arienzo. She has performed in America, Europe and Japan, and during the five years of her residence in Spain (1992-1997) she worked intensely with the tango: creating her own ballet, founding a school and inaugurating the “Casa del Tango” (Tango House) in Sevilla. The presence and solidity of her dance are balanced perfectly with the beauty of her movements, and this ensures that her dancing is always at the highest level.

GUSTAVO: Dancer and internationally ranking choreographer, he is also the pioneer of a new technique of teaching  the tango, now famous worldwide. After more than twenty years of experience and touring all over the world , he imparts his knowledge with conceptual clarity and a rich technique. Being an exceptional  analyst and investigator, his abilities have revolutionized tango dancing towards the end of the 20th century.  Those who best know the world of tango dancing also appreciate his knowledge of tango dancing history and styles which he knows how to materialize through the creativity of his improvisations. The critics in Bs. As. said: "…You could say that three stylistic tendencies contend for supremacy: Urquiza's style,  Almagro's style and  Naveira's style …" (Clarín 8/8/99, Buenos Aires Argentina).
They met, joined their capacities and found a great harmony. Together, Gustavo and Giselle have successfully performed in many festivals such as Sitges (Barcelona), Neufchateau, Oslo, Paris, Amsterdam, Hannover, Karlsruhe, Dusseldorf, Porto, Madrid, London, Basel, Zurich, Bergen, Bardolino, Padova, Genova, Fivizzano, Bologna, Buenos Aires and more.

They  have also given demonstrations in the most renowned milongas of Buenos Aires. When they are not traveling, they continue with their tango classes in the Argentine capital.

"...inclined towards the aesthetic, the technical, and extremely able in the choreographic composition of the musical rhythm: they are Gustavo & Giselle…” (“L'Arena”, 8/5/99, Verona, Italia);

“…standing out was the quality of one of the best couples that currently exists: Giselle Anne & Gustavo Naveira …” (“Tangoneón”, dec.99, Madrid, España).

"...Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne represent one of the very great expressive forms of the argentine tango. Teaching since many years in Argentina and in Europe, they are an obliged reference for there dancing style and their teaching technique at the same time closed to tradition. Naveira (also well-known for his participation in the film "The Tango Lesson" from Sally Potter) is universally known for his prodigious technique and original style. Giselle Anne for her virtuous and beautiful dancing that has brought her as choreographer and dancer to famous shows. But their most important characteristic is the capacity of transmitting the sense of harmony, intensity and passion that join the couple of tango dancers....” ( Il Piccolo, 22nd November 2002, Trieste, Italia).

Workshop Schedule (subject to changes & additions!)

Sun Sep 13    Mon Sep 14
1:15-1:30pm Registration/Warm-up   6:15-6:30pm Registration/Warm-up
1:30-3:00pm Class:

"El Abrazo Milonguero" ($31 w/$1 PayPal fee)

One can say that the milonguero experience involves a dancing embrace, instead of simply a dance frame.  The emotional qualities of embracing someone are supported by choices the dancers make to remain in a state of physical and emotional intimacy.  We’ll explore certain techniques to maximize comfort and pleasure, while also maximizing the movement possibilities in this intimate embrace.

  6:30-8:00pm Class:

"Los Giros Milongueros" ($31 w/$1 PayPal fee)

The tango of the milongas requires more than ever the need to turn easily, confidently, with satisfying expressive possibilities.  We will work on mastering the techniques inherent in the decision of two people to rotate their embrace, how to play with the axis location, and what common stylistic tendencies arose during the milonguero period of development in tango.

3:00-3:15pm Registration/Warm-up/Practica

8:00-8:15pm Registration/Warm-up/Practica

3:15-4:45pm Class:

"El Ocho Cortado" ($31 w/$1 PayPal fee)

This may be a “signature move”, in the eyes of many, for tango milonguero.  We’ll explore its origin (which may surprise you!), the possibilities for variations of this concept to fit different circumstances, and some of the interesting expressive possibilities contained within this basic idea.

  8:15-9:45pm Class:

"Musicality, Feeling & Navigation" ($31 w/$1 PayPal fee)

The music fills us with feelings we want to share, the partner in our arms is inspiring us to our most artful expression within our shared silent language, the floorspace around us shifts and flows without end, presenting leaders with endless navigation situations to resolve, and presenting followers with endless opportunities to “choose to relax” and trust their leader’s perspective and intention.  This common set of experiences for social dancers more than anything forms the core of the social tango encounter.  We’ll look at some solutions to common problems that arise, and possible artistic responses to some frequent opportunities.
